In our backyard we have a starfruit tree, which so far has never produced anything but leaves and to me looks frail all the time. After our cold snap, some of it's leaves look burned. But it is growing and continues to put out new growth. It's in a corner of the yard in an area I landscaped with rocks to cut down on the weeds, but it does get a few weeds and today Caleb and I were pulling them out, when suddenly I felt a prick on my right arm. It felt like I had just rubbed against something sharp, but then the feeling spread around the initial prick and started to burn. I looked at my arm, but didn't see anything, so I lifted up the nearest branch where my arm had been before the pain started.
And here is what I found! These are saddleback caterpillars - and evidently caterpillars are a theme in my life these days! Between the silent chrysalises in the butterfly cage and the fat green hawkmoth caterpillar rolled up in a leaf outside the door, and now these little prickly guys!
See those spiky things! ouch! These are tiny, maybe a centimeter long. Online, I read that their sting is similar to a bee sting and might cause nausea, but I feel ok. Evidently they aren't too dangerous, but it did hurt!I'm not sure what to do with them because they grow into moths and I read that moths can spend a long time rolled up in their cocoons (months, not days like the painted ladies we expect next week), plus I don't really want them to eat my tree or sting my kids. But I also read that moths are in decline and I'd hate to squish them if they are a dying breed.
*Sigh* decisions...
Well on the other side of the house...
My dad has a tree that I always forget the name of, but it looks similar to the Poinciana trees that grow so prolifically down here. The Poincianas in Miami have red flowers, but my dad's tree has orange flowers. I have always admired them and he gave me a few seeds to try to start here. And as you can see, one has sprouted! It's so little, it's hard to believe that it might someday be a huge shade tree!
The critters are cute. Glad the sting wasn't too dangerous.
