On being AMA

Because of my age, I am being classed as potentially high risk for this pregnancy (AMA is Advanced Maternal Age).  I had a genetic consultation today (this was just a part of the first ultrasound - the one where they measure the nuchal pad and do the alpha fetal protein blood test - which they do routinely for younger women too).  In the genetic consultation, I learned that because of my age, my baby has greater than a 99% chance of being just fine.  Which really surprises me - because I had always been under the impression that being over 35 was statistically much more ominous.

6.26 cm long from head to bottom :)

Baby feet!  The ultrasound tech loved baby feet, I have to concur!
The tech will not give you specifics, if there is something truly wrong, a doctor will talk to you later, but I paid attention and noted that the nuchal pad was in the normal range and that the nasal bridge was visible - both of these are very good things.  I declined the invasive tests, but took a new blood test that can give risks for chromosomal abnormalities and it also tells the gender before you can tell it by ultrasound!

My due date is unchanged (July 25) and I start week 13 Saturday.  I already feel so much better and less tired.  The tired part changed on a dime - one day I was dragging and the next day, I had my normal energy level.  I want to add a ticker to my blog, but I can't figure it out!  Blogger is not the same as it was in 2010.

  1. I was AMA, gestational diabetic, and had arthritis. Talk about feeling old!

    1. I didn't even think about you being AMA with Romy! That is an impressive list Meredith! I'm hoping not to add to mine :)

  2. Here's the $10,000 question: are you going to let us know the baby's gender? YOU BETTER!
