Although I don't remember exactly what day it was, I know that about this time in August in 1999 my brother and I drove down to Miami in my old white car. I remember that we had planned to make it in 3 days, but after we got to Ft. Pierce, we decided to just keep on going and made it in 2. (Rob and I actually made the trip in 1 day once, but that was just craziness.)
It was never my plan to stay down here for 10 years, but after a while, I guess I stopped having a plan! It isn't Biblical (Proverbs 16:9, 19:21) - or at least it isn't Biblical to hope in your plans.
Even though I haven't worked at the BCM for 8 years, I still find myself daydreaming sometimes about how I would have done things differently, if I could have had the experience of 10 years of living in Miami to filter ideas through. I couldn't understand why so many college students still lived at home and why they were so different from people back home.
It is hard to condense 10 years, but I will say this, I've gone to the same grocery store for almost 7 years and still almost never run into people I know. Whenever we do sell our house, I am a little scared of uprooting, but when I really think about it, my family will go with me and almost all of my friends here have either moved away or plan to move away, what am I leaving? Just my grocery store.
...I don't mean to suggest that there is nothing redeeming about Miami. The food is very good, the landscaping is just beautiful and it is awfully nice to wear sandals in January.
the part about leaving the grocery store made me laugh. I know how you feel though. I do miss lots of things... just not summers, mosquitoes, or traffic.
