Okra is something I've eaten all my life, but I never really noticed how it grew. I think because it is kind of prickly, my mom never asked me to pick it. But it is curious stuff.

In this picture you can see one mature okra ready to be picked and a flower. Basically the flower blooms and falls off and the okra is underneath.

Here you can see a smaller one, plus a couple of bugs.

Eeek! Bugs again!

Although I guess most people think of gumbo for okra, but my mom usually fried it. Fried it smells like popcorn and tastes, hmm, well like okra. My mom cuts it into rounds, spreads them on a pan and par-cooks them, then transfers it to a freezer bag for storage.

According to
this site, it's an herb and in a pinch you can use the seeds to make a sort of coffee!
