A Second Chance

Everyday at naptime, Caleb and I read one book. I sort of let him pick - and for several days in a row he has chosen a Veggie Tales book based on their Jonah movie. I loved Veggie Tales in college and I still like what they produce, but it feels weird to read the story of Jonah and add in the worm as a traveling companion. I know there IS a worm in the real story, but it just seems kind of a stretch...what am I saying?!? Jonah is played by an anthropomorphized stalk of asparagas! Reality!!!!

Well for a kid who's nuts about boats and fish (or "shish" as he calls them), it's a real hit.

So if you're familiar with the movie, the scene in the belly of the fish has a musical number with vegetables singing a song about how God is a God of second chances. They alude to the song in the book and then say, "Have you ever needed a second chance?" When I get to that part, Caleb looks up at me solemnly and nods, yes, he's needed a second chance.

Sniff* It's humbling to realize that even a kid who's not yet done anything worse than pull the dog's tail needs forgiveness.

  1. that's sweet. In the Veggie Tale version of Esther (which I love) instead of the bad guy (forgot the name) going to the gallows, he goes to the land of perpetual tickling. This grim reaper guy comes out with a feather and takes him off laughing. It's hilarious.
