Yesterday Caleb and I went to a double birthday party. It was for two sisters from our church - turning 1 and 3 - so some of the people there were people I know from church and a good many other people were total strangers, but they seemed to all know each other. Caleb had a really good time, he got his first balloon animal (actually it was a balloon sword) and tasted cotton candy for the first time. I expected him to have more of a sugar rush, but he managed his sweets pretty well.
The group of people who knew each other, but didn't know me all had little babies - all in the crawl/pull up stage, 8 or 9 months old I guess...seems like a long time ago already! It was funny to me how they talked to each other. Funny and embarassing because I know I've had those same exact conversations, mostly in the safety of playgroup, where you can gush/boast/vent non-stop about all the baby stuff in your life and feel like everyone understands (and at playgroup, they do.)
My theory is that parents (particularly first time parents) talk like that about their babies because they can't talk to the baby! As Caleb is learning to talk, I find myself needing less (but not much less) to talk about every detail of his day...which is my day.
Anyway, I thought it was funny how this dad crossed my path yesterday (in hot pursuit of his crawler) and for no reason told me, "He puts everything in his mouth." (That was the exact extent of our conversation, as I did not say anything in response.) It was funny to me because, don't they all put everything in their mouth at that age? Ah, well "trifles make the sum of life" quotes Dickens...and that is certainly true of babies.
