North Carolina: Balsam Mountain Road

One day we set out to drive the Balsam Mountain Road.  It is an unpaved road that snakes through the mountainous forest.  The entry sign described it as "primitive", but this day we were more informed so we were ready for that.

On the road we stopped to hike the Spruce Mountain Trail, which is about a mile up to a remote campsite.  It is all uphill and right on the edge most of the way!  It is way up there and there are plants and trees we did not see lower down.  We picnicked at the campsite - a circle of grass with a nearby bear-proof pulley system to store food in a tree.  We couldn't help but feel like a bear could pop out of the bushes at any moment!  But none did.

Whatever this is, it's prickly and stings.

We saw bunches of this at the highest elevations.
Balsam Mountain Road is not this straight all the way.
The trail I'd say is a good challenge for hiking with children, but not all that hard.  It doesn't have much of a view at the top, but the trees and plants along they way are interesting.  It is not very clearly marked, so if you want to hike it, it's best to know where to look for it.
