We watched two videos (one specifically about the Grand Canyon and one more general one) and read a couple of books about Arizona, a book about deserts, and one book each of Navajo and Hopi stories - all courtesy of the Poor Man's University (aka - the public library).
I also found some great state coloring pages on the Crayola website.
We did similar pages for Alabama and Alaska too.
Caleb decided on his own to make a paper saguaro cactus. The kids were very interested in cacti, but especially the saguaro, which gets ridiculously tall. One of our books said up to 5 stories tall, which I have a hard time even imagining! It also turns out that South Florida is a good place for cacti because of our long dry season. The kids each got to pick one out to adopt. Caleb named his "Desert".
Annalise named hers "Hannah".
And last but not least, we had a meal to wrap things up. We had Navajo Fry Bread(served with taco filling) - very tasty and super easy - and I generally do not deep fry anything (because of my phobia of boiling oil).
And Hopi Corn Stew, which called for meat, but since I was serving it as a side, didn't include it. (If you click on the recipe links, you can see that both recipes are traced back to Arizona.)
The meal was well liked by all! And the recipes were so easy and economical...we may have them again soon :)
Since we are going in alphabetical order, next month is Arkansas! And coincidentally, we will also be visited by some real Arkansans! :)
Funny, we really enjoy the fried bread that a restaurant in Grand Cayman serves and I was trying to find a recipe for it. I ran across the Navajo bread too.
