Ah, birthday pancakes - Today is Caleb's 5th birthday - instead of a party our plan was to take him on a glass bottomed boat ride (a whole coral reef themed birthday, not just the cake), but the weather was not ideal and, not being tourists and bound by travel dates, we will postpone the ride until the conditions are better.

Instead, two butterflies eclosed today (Lori, right after I commented on your blog that we hadn't had any caterpillars, we got tons of them.).

And Rob took Caleb fishing - their prize catch was this turtle.

Caleb's birthday dinner request - Star Pot Pie (
Alton Brown's recipe).
The cake:

Folk I am pretty pleased with this cake - it was SO EASY to make. The coral and fish are all Starbursts. I mean seriously, how much would I have had to pay for a cake like this at a bakery and I made it myself with two eighty-five cent packages of Starbursts?!?! I had plenty of time to make them too because on Tuesday I hurt my foot pretty badly - we thought at first I might have broken my big toe, regardless I had to sit and prop it up, which I did in a chair right next to the microwave where I heated the candies for 6-7 seconds on high and rolled and molded them just like play-doh. Super easy, today I just iced the cake, piped on some green lines for extra sea-grass, added crushed rice crispies, and stuck in all the coral that would fit.

Caleb's reaction to the above cake!

ReplyDeletethe star pot pie looks amazing! happy b-day caleb BR
ReplyDeleteImpressive cake! We like family birthdays instead of big parties, too. Last year we did snow tubing for our two February babies. A glass bottom boat ride sounds awesome.
