Escargot

Miami is such a wild place. I grew up in the country and I don't think there were as many insects and reptiles underfoot even in the deepest of woods. There are times in the year when our bushes are just covered in the biggest, greenest caterpillars I've ever seen. There are times when everything is crawling with lizards of all sizes. There are so many lizards that you sometimes step on them when out for a walk. They get caught in the door or between the window and the screen. They climb the walls. Great big lizards fall out of trees, sometimes on your car. Teeny tiny baby lizards hid in the corners. There are giant grasshoppers, ghost crabs, ibis (ibises or ibisi, I don't know, little greyish white birds), and scorpions.

Right now (early wet season) is snail season. Every night if I want to go out to the car I have to ballet dance over the snails who are taking their good time crossing our sidewalk. Inevitably, we step on these poor creatures. Even Mako stepped on a snail. They die with a loud crack and their snail buddies don't even miss a beat.
