So here is the final result:
Here are the kids' costumes when we tried them on at home.
I made Caleb's chain mail out of some formal dress fabric - one of the few things I bought. The hood was very easy, but a little itchy. Many of the other boys wore chain mail style hoods, but I only saw one that was actually metal.
For Annalise's dress I gathered a big rectangle of fabric and sewed it onto a tank top (ditto for the sleeves). Everything on her costume was leftover fabric from my personal stash.
I didn't even modify Natalie's halloween costume. The top was a little tight, but the skirt was still long enough. Everyone thought it was cute and appropriate for her to be Elizabeth I (because of her red hair). I told them that the rest of us were obscure characters who faded into history.
A couple of my friends' kids who I thought were especially cute/creative:
I like a costume that shows research! The real blackbeard wore matches in his beard too!
More face-in-hole fun:

For lunch there were no plates, forks, or other utensils. We each took a big slice of bread and piled food on that. Instead of traditional turkey legs, we had chicken legs :)
I was wondering, if we did Reniassance this year, what on earth will they come up with next year! So I asked a friend, "What did they do last year?" and she said, "Oh, we all just went to the beach!"
Nice job. Very cute!
