Q

I thought this was interesting:

Last night Caleb made a "Q" with his spaghetti. :) He is not yet able to draw letters with a crayon or pencil. Actually he doesn't draw anything other than scribbles yet. But I thought it was interesting that he knew how to make a Q with something he could manipulate - his food!

Caleb really likes the letter Q. He doesn't know the whole alphabet, but has a few favorite letters and Q is number 1 for now. I think he likes it because it sounds funny, but also because he is fascinated with circles and ovals. And since Q is an oval with a tail...well that's just hilarious!

Other-Caleb-wise, is there any really effective potty training method? I have tried a few different things - stickers, cotton underpants, potty-training Bob, setting timers, bare bottom days, and nothing seems to be making the difference I want to see - that is, Caleb telling me -at least some of the time- that he needs to go to the bathroom (other than when he just wants to get out of bed!). Is this something that we will just have to wait for him to grow into or is there something that will actually nudge him along in the process?

  1. Our best attempts involved setting the microwave timer in 30 minute intervals and sitting on the potty every 30 minutes (whether he thought he needed to or not) and going without pants/diapers/undies (Tyler, not us). Ultimately, though, what worked best for us was when I put the potty away for a couple months, and we didn't even talk about it. We all took a break from the stress. Then one day I told him he would start using the big boy potty on Monday. We talked about it all week. When Monday came, we pulled out the potty, put away the diapers, and had the potty training thing down within a week. I guess he was just ready that time.

Fortunately, Danielle was so much easier because she had Tyler to follow. She wanted to wear underwear like him and started using the potty before she was 2 1/2.

I know how frustrating potty training can be, but suddenly it will just happen and you'll wonder why you were so uptight about it in the first place. Good luck.

  3. Well, girls if it's any consolation, the twins weren't successful until they were three. Things went really well up until Andy was born (just before their 3rd birthday) and when the baby came home the training flew out the window. Like Lori, I waited a couple of months and hit it again. They caught on in a flash. I waited with Andy until he was about 2 1/2 and things went a little smoother--of course there was no baby after him. Whew!
